Ruritan Club Awards Scholarship to Mason

The Grand Junction Ruritan Club awarded its Annual Scholarship at the June monthly meeting. Dakedra Mason, a recent graduate of Middleton High School, was the recipient. “You have made your family, your school, and your hometown of Grand Junction very proud,” said Mary Jo Gordon, Scholarship Committee Chairman as she presented Mason with a check.
Miss Mason, daughter of Dekita Cheairs, was elected Salutatorian of her class after ranking second in a class of 71 graduates. She maintained a 4.0 GPA from the ninth through the twelfth grades. This was achieved in spite of a non-stop schedule of extra-curricular activities in school, the community, and her church.
At Middleton High, she was a member of the DECA Club which is a business club focusing on entrepreneurship. Mason was also a member of the Criminal Justice Club where she learned the rules of the courtroom and joined in mock trials. As a member of the Beta Club, her volunteer work included tutoring elementary students, working in the Fall Festival, and singing in the City Choir. In addition to club activities, Mason was a cheerleader and a member of the Middleton Lady Tigers basketball team. In her “spare” time, she is a member of her church praise team.
