Whiteville citizens concerned about solid waste fees

County Commissioner Charles Vincent Morrow had a long list of items he wanted to talk about during his Whiteville Town Hall meeting on Saturday, March 12, but the only topic he really got to discuss was the proposed change in the way the solid waste fees will be collected.
The Hardeman County Commission voted 11-4 to ask State Representative Johnny Shaw to pass a private act that would allow the county to place the solid waste fee on the county property tax bill. This proposal was a hot topic at the meeting, taking up most of the time allotted.
Several homeowners had concerns about the plan, especially ones on a fixed income, who were worried about having to come up with that much money at one time, but Morrow was able to calm their fears.
“People will still be able to come in and pay on a quarterly basis at the the Solid Waste office, or they can pay semiannually  at Mary Powell's office,” said Morrow.
Morrow also explained that the main reason this is being done is because many people do not pay the fees, and they are needed to operate the landfill.
