Whiteville approves funds for water retention basin

The Whiteville Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted unanimously during their Monday, Feb. 1 meeting, to approve spending $435,086 to construct a water detention basin in an effort to control flooding.
According to Whiteville Mayor James Bellar, the water detention basin will be built on an eight acre tract of land behind the Whitehall Apartments, and will be used to help control flooding around Cross Ave. The basin is designed to catch rain water, then release the water slowly so as to prevent flooding.
In other action, the board unanimously approved hiring a new city attorney. John E. Talbott of Henderson was unanimously approved. He will work for a small retainer fee each month.
The board also approved to condemn two pieces of property that are badly in need of  cleanup, including the MFA Oil company, and the Corner Market.
The next Whiteville Board of Aldermen Meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 7.
