American Legion Post 198 hosts Middleton Memorial Day program

Approximately 50 people attended as American Legion Post 198 held its ninth annual Memorial Day program in Middleton.
The first portion of the program is normally held at the Veteran’s Wall outside city hall. It was moved to the Community Center due to inclement weather. Rain did not dampen the dignity and solemnity as Middleton remembered and paid respects to its war dead.
The ceremony opened with Auxiliary member Yvonne Williams leading attendees in singing our National Anthem and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. After a prayer by Rev. Sam Cox, pastor of First Baptist Church Middleton, the proceedings moved briefly outdoors where Post members Wayne Madden and Jim Gray placed a memorial wreath at the foot of the center’s flag pole. Gerald Nichols of the Marine Corps league played Taps.
The program resumed indoors where Post Commander James Burchfield welcomed and introduced guests. Linda Barnes, Auxiliary President, was the first speaker.
“On this Memorial Day, let us pause to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Today we honor those who died fighting for our country,” she said.
