Hardeman County Community Calendar

  • The Lee Ola Roberts Library in Whiteville is currently offering a Summer Reading Food Program Schedule at their location at 140 W. Main St. in Whiteville. The program sponsored by the Southwest Human Resource Agency is feeding children from ages 1 to 18 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. every week day until Friday, August 5. Along with the free meals, education programs are scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Music on the Square continues this Friday night with the Wise Guys opening at 7:00 p.m. and Johnny Collier headlining the evening at 8:00 at the Bolivar Downtown Amphitheatre where there’s always a great family atmosphere and concessions.
  • The Annual Whiteville Youth Fishing Derby will take place this Saturday, June 11. This free event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration and the weigh in will be at 11:00 a.m.  Age categories are 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16. There will be trophies, prizes, hot dogs and drinks. The Annual Whiteville Lake Inman Pettigrew is sponsored by TWRA, Hardeman County and The Whiteville Lake Committee. www.TNWildife.org.
  • The NAACP is sponsoring a Financial Workshop at 208 Hope St., in Bolivar on Saturday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m.  Attendees will receive information about reverse mortgages, help home owners and persons planning to purchase a home, what to look for in a mortgage documents and credit report information will also be given. There is no fee to attend.
  • The Bolivar-Hardeman County Library’s Summer Reading Program is underway and this Friday features Mr. Bond the Science Guy at 1:30 p.m. Other events scheduled this summer are Kids Krafts and Yoga, Olympic Game Activities, a Back to School Piñata Party and more every Friday except for the week of July 4.  Middle school beta students and High school students will be helping with the summer reading program.  The Mid Week Story Hour will have author of Children’s Books, Natalie Wade on Wednesday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m. Other volunteers and readers are needed.  If you have some free time during the day, and/or would like to start a mid week preschool story hour, call the Bolivar-Hardeman County Library at 658-3436.   • Rocky Springs Baptist Church will have their homecoming this Sunday, June 12. Potluck lunch will follow morning worship. Cross Winds Bluegrass Gospel Group will be singing following lunch. Pastor Skippy Rowland and congregation invite all who would like to attend. All are always welcome at Rocky Springs.
  • Brints Chapel will have a Ladies’ and Men’s meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 12. A business meeting will be conducted following the evening service. Vacation Bible School will be from June 20-24 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. On Sunday, June 26 Brints Chapel will have a VBS Commencement at 11:00 a.m. There will be grilled hamburgers and hotdogs a block party trailer following.
  • The Hardeman County Literacy Council will have a two day yard sale Thursday, June 16 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Friday, June 17 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at 202 Hope St., behind the Bolivar Electric Dept.   • The Bolivar Senior Center will sponsor a Health Fair on Friday, June 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Bolivar Municipal Building in the community room.  All seniors are invited.
  • The Ride for Matthew will take place on June 18 at the Family Entertainment Center, 17290 Hwy 64 in Somerville. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. with kickstands up at 10:00 a.m. This benefit ride is not limited to motorcycles.  B $10/driver and $5/rider and ride for Matthew T-shirts are $15.   • New Bethel Baptist Church on Hwy 57 in Middleton will have homecoming on Sunday, June 19. The New Destiny Singers will sing at the 11:00 a.m. worship service and again at 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon. Pastor Robert Buse invites all to attend.
  • Lifeline Blood Services will be at the Middleton Community Center on Thursday, June 30 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. You can save time by registering online at lifelinebloodserve.org. When you give blood in June, you can register to win four tickets to Six Flags, St. Louis. Please remember to bring your photo ID and all blood donors will receive a free t-shirt.
  • The Hardeman County UT Extension Office presents Kids in the Kitchen Wednesday, June 29 through Friday, July 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the First Methodist Church Activities Building in Bolivar.  $25 for kids ages 7-12. Call the UT-TSU Extension office to sign up.  658-2421.
  • The Hardeman County Chapter of the APTA is having an 'ol Fashion 4th of July on Saturday, July 2 with hamburger and hot dog plates on the grounds at The Pillars. Come in period dress and get half off. More details to come next week.
  • Hickory Valley’s Annual 4th of July Picnic and Parade will take place on Monday, July 4 with parade lineup at 10:00 at the Hickory Valley Gin. Be creative and decorate yourself, a tractor, motorcycle, bicycle wagon or build a float. Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Picnic immediately follows the parade.  Bring a lawn chair and a dish to share with your neighbors. In addition we are unveiling the first part of a City Hall redecoration project with photos of historical homes, cotton farming, sassafras production, trains, churches and schools and ask anyone who might have an old photo, to share it with us for display.  The town of Hickory Valley, established in 1856, provides hot dogs with all the fixings, lemonade and iced tea. Come and join us at Hickory Valley City Hall, 7115 Rt. 18 South of Bolivar.
